Kwahu Business Forum: Young Ghanaians Must Succeed in Business Without Political Ties – Mahama Calls for End to ‘Who You Know’ Culture

Former President John Dramani Mahama has urged for the creation of an inclusive economic system that empowers young Ghanaians to succeed based on talent, innovation, and hard work—not political connections.

Addressing participants at the 2025 Kwahu Business Forum on Saturday, April 19, Mr. Mahama stressed the need to eliminate barriers that hinder young people from transforming their ideas into thriving businesses.

“A young graduate can turn his tech idea into a thriving business without political connections,” he said. “The future must be one where success is based on ability, ideas, and resilience—not who you know.”

Mr. Mahama outlined strategic priorities aimed at improving the business environment for youth, including expanding access to finance for start-ups, reducing bureaucratic red tape, and promoting nationwide skills development.

He highlighted promising sectors such as green energy and digital technology as areas where the next generation of Ghanaians can make meaningful contributions through innovation.

“Our goal is to create a space where all young Ghanaians, regardless of background or political affiliation, can start and grow businesses with confidence,” Mr. Mahama added.

The forum brought together policymakers, entrepreneurs, and investors to discuss ways of unlocking Ghana’s economic potential through entrepreneurship and innovation.
