Ghana’s agriculture sector has long been identified as a key driver of economic transformation, with experts advocating for strategic investments to unlock its full potential.
As part of a renewed agenda, President John Dramani Mahama has announced that his administration will industrialize the sector to make it more attractive to young people. Speaking during his State of the Nation Address at Parliament House in Accra, he emphasized the importance of value addition, processing, and export to enhance profitability and sustainability.
“We will implement an agric programme to facilitate access to land banks by young farmers, connect young graduates to opportunities in the agriculture value chain, and promote greenhouse farming among the youth, benefiting approximately 30,000 young people,” President Mahama stated.
Cutting Down Importation and Reviving Livestock Farming
To reduce Ghana’s dependence on food imports, President Mahama outlined plans to revive the livestock sector by restocking breeding farms with pigs, cattle, sheep, and goats. This initiative aims to boost local livestock production, create jobs, and improve self-sufficiency.
Enhancing Mechanization and Support for Farmers
A key component of the plan is the establishment of flagship Farmer’s Service Centres in every agricultural district. These centers will provide essential mechanization services, quality seeds, and extension support to farmers, ensuring improved productivity and efficiency across the sector.
Protecting Fisheries and Marine Biodiversity
President Mahama also addressed concerns in the fisheries sector, stressing the need for stronger enforcement of measures to curb illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. These efforts aim to protect Ghana’s marine biodiversity while securing the livelihoods of hardworking fisherfolk.
A New Era for Agriculture
With these ambitious policies, Ghana is set to witness a transformation in agriculture, positioning the sector as a viable and profitable avenue for economic growth and youth employment. As the government pushes forward with its industrialization agenda, stakeholders in the industry will be looking forward to concrete steps that will bring these plans to life.

Thanks to Allah finally agriculture is being placed at the top of our national development agenda.
