Oti Regional Minister Announces Government’s Irrigation Project to Boost Agriculture

The Oti Regional Minister, Mr. John Kwadwo Gyapong, has announced the government’s commitment to constructing an irrigation project in the region, a transformative initiative set to enhance agricultural productivity in the Biakoye and Krachi East Municipalities.

According to the Minister, the project will bring significant benefits to the region, known for its fertile soil and abundant water resources, enabling farmers to cultivate crops all year round. This initiative forms part of the government’s broader “Irrigation for Wealth Creation” project, which aims to irrigate 10,000 hectares of farmland across eight regions within the next 12 months.

Currently, Ghana’s irrigation coverage is only 1.6%, well below the West African average of 13.9%. The primary goal of the project is to unlock the Oti Region’s agricultural potential, fostering increased crop yields and improving farmers’ livelihoods.

Addressing stakeholders and traditional authorities in the Biakoye and Krachi East Municipal and District Assemblies, Mr. Gyapong emphasized that providing a reliable water source for irrigation will enable year-round farming, boosting productivity regardless of seasonal variations.

“This project is of great significance to the Oti Region, where farming and fishing are the main economic activities. With sustainable irrigation, farmers will see improved yields, higher incomes, and overall economic growth,” he stated.

As the project gains momentum, its impact is expected to be profound, improving the lives of farmers and communities in the targeted districts. The availability of consistent irrigation will lead to increased agricultural output, ensuring food security and economic prosperity for the region.

Representing the chiefs and people of Nkonya, Mr. Prosper Glitse expressed gratitude for the Minister’s initiative. During a courtesy call, he welcomed the project and assured the Minister of the community’s full support in ensuring its successful implementation. He emphasized that once completed, the irrigation project will significantly enhance the livelihoods of Nkonya residents, offering greater economic stability and development opportunities.

With strong stakeholder collaboration and government commitment, the Oti Region’s irrigation project stands as a beacon of progress, promising a future of sustainable agriculture and economic transformation.
