Amanokrom Akuapem witnessed a groundbreaking moment yesterday, Saturday, February 15, 2025, as the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Sammi Awuku, officially launched the Ofie Market Initiative—a transformative project aimed at providing farmers with a direct marketplace to sell their produce.
The initiative is set to reduce post-harvest losses, ensure fair pricing, and create economic opportunities for traders within the municipality. By allowing farmers to sell their produce at farm gate prices, the market is expected to attract buyers from Accra and beyond, bringing much-needed financial relief to hardworking farmers.
A Market That Empowers Farmers
The Ofie Market, which will be held once every month, aims to eliminate the role of middlemen who often drive up prices and reduce farmers’ earnings. This direct-to-consumer approach will stabilize food prices, increase farmers’ profits, and promote fair trade practices.
In addition to fresh food crops, the market will feature a wide range of products, including livestock and other locally-produced goods, creating a diverse trading environment that benefits both farmers and consumers.
Government Support for Farmers and Traders
Speaking at the launch, Hon. Awuku reaffirmed his commitment to supporting farmers by helping them increase their yields and access better market opportunities. He revealed ongoing discussions with financial institutions to introduce interest-free loan schemes for farmers and traders. These loans will provide much-needed support for purchasing essential farming inputs such as fertilizers, improved seedlings, and modern equipment to boost production.
Additionally, he emphasized ongoing road rehabilitation projects linking Mangoase to Adawso and Larteh, which will improve access to farming communities and ensure that produce reaches markets in good condition, further minimizing losses.
New Agricultural and Youth Employment Initiatives
As part of a broader vision to enhance agricultural productivity and create employment, Hon. Awuku announced plans for:
- A coconut plantation initiative to supply raw materials for Ghana’s booming coconut oil and beverage industries.
- A cassava plantation and processing project, which will allow farmers to add value to their produce by processing cassava into flour, starch, and gari, leading to higher earnings.
These projects are expected to generate employment opportunities for the youth in areas such as processing, packaging, and distribution, ensuring that the agricultural sector remains a key driver of local development.
Investment in Education and Student Welfare
Beyond agriculture, Hon. Awuku announced his plan to establish a welfare fund for teachers, aimed at improving education in the municipality. Recognizing the importance of student nutrition, he also secured a partnership with an American organization to add four more schools to the School Feeding Program, ensuring that students receive breakfast and lunch daily. This initiative is expected to boost student concentration and attendance, particularly among children from low-income families.
Traditional Leadership Endorsement
Nana Osim Kwatia II, Amanokromhene and Akwapim Gyasehene, who chaired the event, commended Hon. Awuku for his visionary leadership. He encouraged farmers to fully embrace the Ofie Market Initiative, highlighting the transportation support that will be provided to help farmers deliver their produce to the market at reduced costs.
With the launch of Ofie Market, the agricultural landscape of Amanokrom Akuapem is set for a major transformation, ensuring that farmers thrive, consumers benefit, and local economies flourish.
