The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an official notice regarding an ongoing export ban imposed by the Government of Burkina Faso on essential agricultural commodities, including rice, millet, maize, sorghum, and white beans (cowpea).
This restriction was initially outlined in a joint communique dated December 19, 2023, which prohibited the export of these goods beyond Burkina Faso’s borders. A subsequent communique, dated November 13, 2024, reaffirmed that the ban remains in effect, urging traders and importers to comply with the directive.
In light of this, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has cautioned Ghanaian traders and businesses that rely on these imports to take immediate note of the restriction. A Ministry spokesperson emphasized the importance of adherence, stating:
“We strongly advise all traders and businesses to comply with this directive. Burkina Faso has reiterated that the ban remains in force, and failure to observe it could result in severe consequences, including trade sanctions.”
The Ministry also urged stakeholders within the affected sectors to explore alternative sources for these commodities and adjust their business strategies accordingly.
This extended ban is expected to impact regional trade, particularly in Ghana, where these crops play a significant role in food security and commerce. The Ministry reassured the public that it will continue to monitor the situation and provide necessary updates to facilitate compliance.
