In a successful joint operation between officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) and the Ghana Revenue Authority’s Customs Division, a major cocoa smuggling attempt was foiled at the Ave-Havi border post. The officers intercepted a truck loaded with over 1,000 gallons of cocoa beans that were being illegally transported from Ghana to Togo.
The truck, bearing registration number AS 2103-W, was driven by Ibrahim Fatawu, who was apprehended at the border while attempting to smuggle the consignment of cocoa beans. The operation was carried out based on actionable intelligence, which led to the truck being waylaid by the security teams.
The 1,115 gallons, which were packed with the smuggled cocoa beans, have been handed over to the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) for proper processing and safeguarding. Meanwhile, the truck has been impounded, and the driver is currently in custody, providing assistance in the ongoing investigation.
The swift action by the GIS and GRA-Customs officers highlights the continued efforts of the Ghana government to curb the illegal exportation of valuable agricultural commodities. Smuggling of cocoa is a serious offense in the country due to its negative impact on the local economy and the livelihoods of farmers who rely on legal trade channels.
Speaking on the matter, Michael Amoako-Atta, the Assistant Commissioner of Immigration in charge of Public Relations, emphasized the commitment of the Ghana Immigration Service to tackling illegal activities at the borders. He assured the public that the service would continue to strengthen its operations in collaboration with other agencies to protect national resources.
In light of this interception, authorities have urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities that may involve illegal trade or smuggling, especially along the country’s border regions.
This successful operation is seen as a significant step in the fight against cocoa smuggling, ensuring that Ghana’s cocoa industry remains protected from illicit activities and benefits the country’s legal exportation and global reputation.
