Poultry Farmers Urge Government for Industry Support

The Central Regional Poultry Farmers Association has called on the government to introduce clear policies to sustain the poultry industry, citing the lack of incentives compared to crop farming.

At a seminar in Agona Swedru, organized in collaboration with ECO Feeding Ghana Limited, experts educated farmers on key challenges such as heat stress, veterinary access, and year-round broiler production.

Association Chairman Nana Dr. Darko Asamoah emphasized the need for financial support, land acquisition, and veterinary staffing to boost production. He also urged the government to encourage poultry farming in Senior High Schools to cut costs on eggs and chicken.

The Central Region once had over 3,800 poultry farmers, but only 1,260 remain due to financial struggles. With Ghana requiring 350 metric tonnes of poultry but producing just 15, urgent intervention is needed.

Dr. Peter Omega, Regional Director of Agriculture, advised farmers to form cooperatives to access funding and resources, while visiting Portuguese expert Mr. Tiago Ferreira stressed the importance of modern feeding methods to enhance poultry resilience.
